The battle over Big Musics push in Congress to impose a new Performance Tax on free, local, AM/FM radio has reached a new low: The Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) has launched a campaign depicting radio broadcasters as a pigs. At their first stop on a nationwide tour, RIAA-backed protesters placed a 12-foot high inflatable pig in front of the National Association of Broadcasters (NAB) headquarters in Washington, DC with a sign declaring, Fair Pay for Musicians. Similar ads on the RIAA campaign Web site depict a pig with a radio antennae tail, its snout in a bucket labeled Bailout Funds. Attempting to piggyback on public ire over last years controversial Congressional bailout of Wall Street banks, RIAA claims that by broadcasting on public airwaves, broadcasters are receiving a bailout from public funds. Yet they conveniently ignore the well-documented fact that for over 80 years radio air time has been their most potent promotion force—resulting in billions of dollars in record sales annually. As the chief lobbying group for the recording industry, RIAA is pushing Congress to pass the Performance Tax, to the tune of almost million spent lobbying these past five years.
