The Orange Balloon

Posted on August 23rd, 2010

A child was fascinated with an orange balloon, which was being given away by a road-side promotional event. That could be a split moment the girl could remember in this crowded, indifferent city.

Milton Keynes: Shut Up, It’s The Best City Or Town Ever

Posted on July 19th, 2010

A 1990 follow-up to the famous mid-eighties “red balloons” promotional campaign for Milton Keynes, the giant lump of concrete in the middle of a forest in Buckinghamshire. While it is actually a lot nicer than its reputation would suggest, being commendably full of green spaces, this advert’s apparent attempt to paint it as essentially the countryside with buildings is taking it to the limit a bit; if this kid did live there, as he apparently wishes, his life wouldn’t actually be that drastically altered. You still get traffic wardens and roadworks and pedestrians, no matter how many trees you’ve gt surrounding the town. Neatly makes reference to the red balloon advert, but sadly no sign of the concrete cows.

Renault 14 : Promotional film Hot Air Balloon Chase

Posted on July 15th, 2010

The Renault 14 is a small family car produced by the French manufacturer Renault between 1976 and 1983. Things got off to a bad start with a disastrous advertising campaign that compared the 14 to the shape of a pear. A preview at Paris’ Pompidou Centre as a bare bodyshell did little to win it customers. The car would later gain a reputation for premature body corrosion which saw the 14 being dubbed as the “rotten pear” by the motoring press. In France, “La poire”‘ (literally “the pear”, but also slang for “gullible”). Renault later attempted to enhance the car’s appeal by relaunching it with improved equipment levels, but the damage was done and the production run ended in 1983 with around one million units sold over a period of just under seven years. The 14 is now a rare sight on the roads of Europe, even in its home country of France where they have tended to last longer than elsewhere due mainly to easy parts availability through the extensive dealer network. Many Renault 14 were used by the French police in the 1980s.
